Dr. Pamela Taylor, N.D., a Philoptohos member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Island, Illinois, has commitments from three of the top naturopathic physicians in the United States to travel to the Monasterio Ortodoxo Lavra Mambre in January of 1998. Their presence has been an ongoing request of Sister Ivonne, a nun of that monastery, and one of the foremost experts in the world on the cultivation and use of medicinal mushrooms. All the doctors have agreed to donate their time and skills for approximately two weeks to conduct workshops and seminars, as well as see patients at the two clinics and orphanage run by the monastery, located in Amatitlan. In addition, the doctors hope to work with the staff to develop protocols based on local resources and materials.

The Ortodoxo Lavra Mambre is the only Orthodox presence in Guatemala, and the health care they offer to people in the region forms an important part of their outreach ministry. A generous initial donation of $1,000 has been made by the St. George Philoptohos, leaving about $2,900 to be raised.

Those wishing to sponsor the doctors’ presence in Guatemala may send donations to the following nonprofit fund:
